ADMT reflections

While doing this ADMT project, I had learnt many things that I think would benefit me in the long run. Such as learning how to use inDesign, Photoshop, and the basics of architecture design and creating a design poster for your design. While doing all these design thinking and journal writing, I have also learnt that to design a building is not easy, and requires a lot of brainstorming and thinking, as well as the considerations to make when designing the building. For a good design, there would be many essentials that can really differentiate a good one and a more inferior one. Such as the position of a entrance, the outer look, the ambience in the building, the uniqueness of the building, the furnitures, lightings, tiles, etc

Although it seems fun at first to be able to create and design your own personal building, it was only after that that I realised how hard was it to really have a good design. For me, having a suitable location to have my building on was quite tough, and I took quite a while searching for a location. It was not easy as Singapore is small and packed, with little empty land left for development. I had considered to redesign a building, but find it hard to explore my creativity as I would be confine to a certain structure of a building, rather than having your own unique design that would stand out from others.

The designing of the building had required some trial and error for certain parts of work out, and the exterior had taken quite some time to make. My journal was not that good as I had some problems with the flow of journal as I was confuse with what to do. It was only when the deadline was near then I had manage to clear up my journal a bit and restructured my journal.

I feel that this project was a bit of a challenge to us as we were inexperienced in this field, and with the time constrain we had to rush the work. Enjoyable, though preparation of this project could be a bit better.

Panoramic View Project

It would be a building that will accommodate shops, food centers, and of course, the top floor to be designed as sea viewing lounge for people to relax and chill-out while viewing the sea. It would be located not too far out at the sea by the beach.

This building is for people to shop and relax after doing lots of activities and having fun at Sentosa. As it is located in Sentosa, it would be quite convenient to access that building. After playing for so long, they would sure to get tired and nothing more than a lounge with a panoramic sea view will help them to chill. With food and beverage sold there too, people will never have to complain where to dine and being dehydrated under the warm weather of Singapore.

What makes a good architectural design?

Good architecture should achieves useful and economical results, regardless of what that result looks like.

There are some major factors.

1. The location of the infrastructure, how it suits its surroundings and serves its purpose.

2. We may design a building with good exterior design, and that creates a attractive infrastructure. While this is one of the aspects required, good ambience is also needed to make a architecture design "good", in a sense that when people enters the building, the interior.

3. The entrance of the architecture design, where people can enter and exit the building without having "traffic jams". Sometimes when entrance of the building is being placed at the wrong place there may be choke points that can cause massive human traffic being stuck in a place.

4. The building must be built to suit its designated purpose. If the infrastructure is to be a shopping mall, and it is located in a area with teenagers and young adults, infrastructure need to be attractive enough with clean and fashionable layout of shops to attract the targeted audience, which are the young adults and teenagers.

5. Internal design need to suit the targeted audience needs. If its mostly for the elderlies, more lifts and elevators need to be built. Stairs could be replaced by incline planes to make it more accessible to disabled elderlies.

6. Good drainage of access rainwater on rainy days are also important as it can prevent a possible "flood" when raining heavily.

What is Architectural design?

Architecture can mean:

  • The art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures.
  • The practice of an architect, where architecture means to offer or render professional services in connection with the design and construction of a building, or group of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use.
  • A general term to describe buildings and other structures.
  • A style and method of design and construction of buildings and other physical structures.
Architecture design refers to the actual design and layout of spaces. Architecture encompasses many different elements including construction, design, and the manipulation of light as it relates to shadow. Throughout history, architects have found ways to create functional and practical spaces using any materials that were available.
